Is it just for kids?Absolutely not. We’ve got a great adult and youth program that combines martial arts with fitness, self-defense and leadership into a fun and exciting workout. How old must my child be to start classes? Our youngest martial arts students generally start when they are 4 years old, however it depends on the individual child, which we will evaluate during the private lesson. Red Belts and up may only test on the formal belt exam dates. What is Kata? What is a Pal-Gwe?Kata is a Japanese word to describe a series of choreographed martial arts movements. (Poom-se is the Korean word.)At USAFMA we use the Korean World Tae Kwon Do Federation Pal-Gwe’s for our traditional forms. Pal-Gwe literally means “Law, Command.” Our forms are Ki-Cho and Pal-Gwe 1 through Pal-Gwe 8. The Pal-Gwe forms refer to a philosophy of universal being, which comprehends truth as constant within the phenomenon of the ever-changing cosmos. Traditionally, as the Tae Kwon Do practitioner executes the Pal-Gwe forms the following is kept in mind: Know yourself, and be in harmony with the universe. Be responsible for yourself, and loyal to your commitments. Be respectful of your relationships; know the limits beyond which your freedom encroaches upon the freedom of another. Be pure in motive, and direct in action.
From Tae Kwon Do by Richard Chun. What is Ki-Cho? (Kihon Kata Ichi – Basic Form One)Ki-Cho is the most basic form and is executed in an “H” pattern. Our Ki-Cho form consists of front stances, down blocks and middle punches. Ki-Cho teaches our students a traditional pattern and allows them to practice fundamental techniques of walking turning, blocking and punching in continuous sequence. What does my child need to know for the belt exam? Each belt level has a specific list of techniques that should be well-practiced for the exam. Your child should know all the appropriate belt level techniques, the concept of the belt and any other definitions as required on their exam. Exams may be viewed and downloaded from our website. What is a pre-exam?A pre-exam is given on the third week of each month, except for belt exam months. The pre-exam gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their techniques. If they pass their pre-exam, they will receive a black stripe on their belt. For Blue Belts and below, two stripes are needed in order to advance to the next belt level. What is Black Belt Club?Black Belt Club is our program for students who are committed to achieve their Black Belt. An application is required and there are additional costs to be a part of the Black Belt Club. Upon becoming a Black Belt Club member, students are able to attend special classes just for the BBC members. These classes include special exam prep classes, sparring team, wrestling team, weapons training, etiquette classes and more. Students in Black Belt Club may wear a special uniform and have a special patch. |
